Justice Waldrop graduated from the University of Texas School of Law with honors in 1987. 

He served as a briefing attorney to Federal District Judge Walter S. Smith before joining the Austin office of Locke Liddell & Sapp (at the time Liddell, Sapp) in 1988. 

He remained in private practice in Austin with Locke Liddell from 1988 to 2005  primarily in the area of civil litigation. 

In addition to practicing civil litigation law as a partner with Locke Liddell, Justice Waldrop also served as a Lecturer and Adjunct Professor of Trial Advocacy at the UT School of Law from 1993-2000. 

Justice Waldrop was appointed to the Third Court of Appeals by the Governor in August 2005.

He was elected in 2006 to a six-year term.
